AMG Built a 637-HP CLE “Black Series” — 30 Cars, Sold Out Before You Learned the Name

AMG built 30 CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung cars at 637 hp RWD and sold them out at reveal. Why the secondary market and CLE 63 allocations are the real story.

AMG Built a 637-HP CLE “Black Series” — 30 Cars, Sold Out Before You Learned the Name

AMG’s apology for the four-cylinder era is a 30-car Mythos flex — and the real story for AutoSnipes is the secondary market + what it does to CLE 63 allocation greed.

---

Name nobody can pronounce. Car everybody wanted.

Spezialanfertigung. Say it slowly. “Custom made,” if your German is rusty.

Mercedes-AMG just dropped the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung — Mythos Series, thirty hand-built cars, already gone before most enthusiasts finished arguing about how to pronounce it. That isn’t a product launch for people who walk into a dealer on a Saturday. That’s scarcity content with a wing, a flat-plane-crank V8 story, and Black Series DNA without the badge.

If you wanted one: you didn’t get one. The interesting question for the rest of us is what this car does to the market that does still have inventory — and to the CLE 63 that hasn’t arrived yet.

What it actually is

Strip the mythos theater and you’re looking at a widebody, rear-drive CLE built like Affalterbach remembered what Affalterbach was for:

  • 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 — about 637 hp (and roughly 627 lb-ft), with AMG talking flat-plane crank character for response and revs
  • RWD — not 4Matic; limited-slip out back; the drift-friendly story enthusiasts have been screaming for since the four-cylinder PHEV years
  • ~375 lbs lighter than the donor-side comparison AMG cites — carbon bodywork, less kit, less mass
  • KW four-way coilovers, serious aero (wing deployed is the hero shot for a reason), Cup 2R rubber in the coverage
  • Akrapovič exhaust, ceramic brake hardware in the press package
  • ~193 mph top end; ~3.9 seconds to 62 mph in the published figures

It’s Black Series in all but name: track-first CLE, midsize coupe, no rear seats in the lightweight brief, Mythos allocation instead of a volume order guide. The badge says Spezialanfertigung. The stance says “we heard you about the turbo-four.”

Why it lands now

The timing isn’t subtle. Enthusiasts have been living through AMG’s turbo-four PHEV hangover — the era where a C-class with a hybrid four was supposed to be the future and instead became a punchline in every group chat. Midsize AMG buyers didn’t stop wanting a “real” V8 coupe. They just stopped getting one.

Then this shows up: RWD, V8, thirty units, sold out. It’s an apology letter written in carbon and boost. Even if you’ll never sit in one, the signal matters — AMG still knows how to build the car people actually wanted, even if they’ll only build thirty of this one.

Sold-out theater

Mythos Series allocation is not a normal retail event. It’s not “check AutoSnipes for dealer leftovers.” It’s a scarcity drop for the people already inside the velvet rope — PureSpeed first, now this CLE, thirty cars, hand-built in Affalterbach, gone.

That theater does two jobs:

  1. Content — every outlet runs the wing shot; every enthusiast account quote-tweets “sold out”
  2. Halo gravity — it makes the forthcoming production CLE 63 feel like the attainable sibling of something mythical

For AutoSnipes, the useful read isn’t “I wish I got one.” It’s “what does sold-out Mythos pricing do when the first flip hits the secondary market — and when CLE 63 MSRP/allocation finally drops?”

AutoSnipes angle: secondary market bomb

Watch three things:

First flips of the 30. When a Mythos CLE 646 lists — auction, broker, private party — that ask becomes a reference point overnight. Ultra-limited ICE specials don’t need volume to move markets; they need one public number. Set a watchlist alert now so you’re not discovering the flip in a screenshot three days late.

ADM expectations when production CLE 63 V8 arrives. Halo cars train dealer behavior. A sold-out 637-hp Mythos CLE gives every allocation gatekeeper cover to talk “market adjustment” on the volume V8 coupe. Buyers on AutoSnipes should track MSRP vs street ask early — ADM isn’t destiny, but Mythos heat is rocket fuel for it.

Last-ICE C63 / CLE values. As the EV mule era approaches and the four-cylinder chapter gets memory-holed, clean late ICE AMG midsize cars get a second look. The 646 doesn’t have to be your car to reprice the emotional value of “actual V8, actual AMG” on the cars you can buy private-party.

This is the AutoSnipes job: not cosplaying as a Mythos owner — pricing the shockwave.

Would you buy this?

Honest fork in the road:

Halo collectible. If you’re the sort of buyer who wants the rarest CLE Affalterbach will stamp for a generation, and you somehow have a path to one of the thirty, you’re not reading a marketplace blog for permission. You’re reading it to understand flip dynamics and comps hygiene.

Wait for a “real” CLE 63 you can actually order. For everyone else, the rational play is patience plus discipline. The production V8 CLE is the car that will hit dealer lots, show up in private-party ads, and generate actual comps. Mythos is the trailer; CLE 63 is the feature. Don’t let sold-out theater stampede you into ADM on the wrong car — or into overpaying for a CLE 53 you were already talking yourself into.

Would we want a RWD 637-hp widebody CLE? Of course. Would we confuse it with a shopping list? No.

Watchlist the shockwave

On AutoSnipes: set alerts for CLE 63, Mythos, and related AMG CLE/C63 inventory. When the first Spezialanfertigung flip lists — or when production CLE 63 MSRP and allocation land — that’s the publish-adjacent moment for pricing, not vibes.

AMG remembered what AMG was for. Thirty buyers already know. The secondary market is about to teach everyone else what that memory costs.

Watchlist it. Don’t mythologize your deposit.
